The Haviland Y-DNA Surname Project Results

The DNA Markers are listed down the left side in green. Everyone will be checked for the same markers, though some participants may pay for fewer (the fewer markers tested, the less accurate the results). Along the top row are project numbers, one assigned to each participant. For a list of customer codes (assigned by DNA Heritage) that match each project number, see the Subject Index. Each column to the right of the markers will contain the numbers that result from each test. These numbers represent the Y-DNA haplotype (composition) of each participant. Each number is the allele for the corresponding marker (the number of times a sequence of bases repeat on the marker of the Y chromosome). The haplogroup is in the bottom row. Those columns in which all 43 markers match perfectly are participants who are related and share a common paternal ancestor. If one marker is different, there is a lesser degree of probability of paternal ancestry. If two markers are different, even lesser probability. This would not mean there is no common paternal ancestor, only that the statistical probability is smaller, or that the common ancestor lived further back in time. It's entirely possible for a son to have one more base repeated on one of these markers than his father, or one less (thus his marker would be -1 or +1 with respect to his father's). This is a mutation, and it's an entirely natural phenomenon. Over many thousands or millions of years, more and more of these mutations do occur in all living things. This is the sort of mutation that on more important genes accounts for the diversity of life! You can read more about that at the DNA Heritage website.
